A storm involving feminism, racism and plastic surgery broke today over the Miss Korea 2013 beauty pageant, when a Japanese blogger pointed out the eerie similarity of the contestants’ faces. This went viral via Reddit as the opposing views lined up, roughly summarised as:
- “You’re racist, they look totally different.”
- “That’s the pressure of male-dominated society.”
- “Girls choose plastic surgery to look more European.”
- “The bosses photoshopped everyone to look like dolls.”
The New York Times has reported that 1 in 5 women in Seoul has had plastic surgery. But whatever the motives, there’s an obvious Stepford Wives vibe going on here.
