Is time running out for the Washington Redskins? For decades, Native American activists have been pressuring the NFL club to drop their racist iconography. Today the mayor of the city, the media and the president all avoid using the team’s name. But for now, the Redskins are sticking with the 60+ year heritage of their name and mascot – and the brand recognition they get.
Last week 99Designs ran an unofficial design contest to put forward reboots of the Redskins’ brand identity. Their crowdsourcing approach produced some wonderful liveries, with nearly 2,000 designs entered. The winner received $500 for their “Washington Warriors” concept – although the first public comment on the design is that it promotes the militarisation of US sport!
